Fix Content Cut Off in Google Docs to PDF

Content that is cut off at the edge of the page in a PDF exported from Google Docs is usually wider than the printable area allows. This is most common with wide tables, large images, and text boxes positioned outside the page margins. Here is how to fix each case.

Fix oversized tables

A table that is wider than the page margins will have its right columns cut off in the PDF. Select the table, right-click, and choose Table properties. Look at the column widths and reduce them so the total table width fits within the page margins. Alternatively, change the page orientation to landscape in File > Page Setup if the table is inherently wide.

Fix oversized images

An image that is wider than the page will be cut off at the right edge in the PDF. Click the image, drag the corner handles inward to resize it, or right-click and choose Image options to set an exact width that fits within the margins. Use the page width minus both margins to calculate the maximum safe image width.

Fix text or content outside the margins

Text boxes and drawings positioned outside the page margins are cut off in the PDF because the export renders only the printable area. Drag any floating text boxes or drawings inside the margin boundaries. To check where the margins are, enable View > Show ruler and note the margin markers.

Landscape orientation for wide content

If you have a legitimate need for wide content, change the page orientation. Go to File > Page Setup, set the orientation to Landscape, and adjust the margins to give maximum printable width. This is the best solution for wide tables or comparison charts that cannot be narrowed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my content cut off only when I print the PDF, not when I view it on screen?

The PDF viewer may be scaling the content to fit the screen. When printed, the actual page size shows and content outside the printable area gets clipped. Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, go to View > Zoom > 100%, and you will see whether the content actually fits within the page boundaries.

Why is my footer text cut off at the bottom of the page?

The footer margin is too small. Go to File > Page Setup in Google Docs and increase the bottom margin and the footer margin. This gives the footer enough space to appear fully within the printable area.
