Fix Broken Columns in Google Docs to PDF

Column layouts that break during PDF export are a common issue with multi-column Google Docs. The Format > Columns feature in Google Docs can render inconsistently in PDF, especially when column content lengths are very different. Here is how to fix it.

Add column breaks to balance content

When one column is much longer than the other, the PDF engine may push content to an unexpected position. Place your cursor at the end of the text in the shorter column and insert a column break with Insert > Break > Column break. This forces the columns to balance at that point and prevents overflow.

Use tables instead of columns for precise layout

For layouts that must be exact, replace Format > Columns with a two-column table. Tables export more predictably to PDF because each cell's content is independently positioned. Set the table borders to transparent if you do not want visible gridlines in the final PDF.

Check for content that spans column boundaries

Images and text boxes set to 'wrap text' can interfere with column flow. An image positioned in column one that is set to wrap text across the column boundary will push text in both columns. Change the image wrap setting to 'In line with text' to keep it within one column.

Verify column settings in Print Preview

Before exporting, open File > Print Preview to see how columns render. If the columns look broken in Print Preview, they will be broken in the PDF. Adjust the column content or switch to a table layout until Print Preview shows the correct layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my two columns collapse into one in the PDF?

This can happen if a large image or table inside the column is wider than the column width. The PDF engine expands the column to fit the content, pushing the second column off the page. Resize the image or table to fit within the column width.

Can I have different numbers of columns on different pages?

Yes. Use a continuous section break (Insert > Break > Section break continuous) to switch between column layouts on the same page or between pages. Each section can have its own column settings.
