Merge Docs into PDF with Named Section Bookmarks

Named bookmarks turn a long merged PDF from a wall of pages into a navigable document. Each section gets a descriptive name that appears in the PDF viewer's outline, letting readers go directly where they need to go.

Creating meaningful bookmark names

Bookmark names come from two sources: the filename of each source document and the heading text within each document. To get meaningful names, name your source Docs clearly in Drive and use descriptive Heading 1 text in each document. A heading that says 'Q1 Financial Results' becomes a bookmark named 'Q1 Financial Results'.

Testing bookmark navigation

After merging, open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Chrome, open the bookmarks panel, and check that all expected bookmarks are present and link to the correct pages. If a bookmark is missing, check that the corresponding heading style is Heading 1 or Heading 2 in the source document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have bookmarks at more than two levels?

The extension creates bookmarks from Heading 1 and Heading 2 styles. For additional nesting levels, edit the bookmark structure in a PDF editor after merging.
