Fix Header and Footer Blank Page Issues in Google Docs to PDF

Oversized headers or footers that push body content off a page can create what appears to be a blank page in the PDF. Here is how to identify and fix header and footer related blank pages.

Check header and footer height

Double-click the header area in the Google Doc to enter header editing mode. If the header contains multiple lines of text, a large image, or extra blank lines, it may be consuming so much vertical space that body content is pushed to additional pages. Remove extra blank lines from the header and reduce large images.

Reduce header and footer margins

Go to File > Page Setup and check the header and footer margin values. If the header margin is very large, it leaves a big gap between the top of the page and the header content, effectively reducing the body area. Set header and footer margins to 0.3 to 0.5 inches for standard documents.

Different first page header creating blank space

If 'Different first page' is enabled and the first-page header area has extra empty lines or large content, the first page body area is smaller. This can push the last line of page one content onto page two, making page one appear partially blank. Clean up the first-page header content.

Footer content extending outside the printable area

A footer with too much content or too large a margin at the bottom can eat into the body area. Check the bottom margin in Page Setup and compare it to the footer margin. The total of bottom margin plus footer margin should leave enough room for body content.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell if the header is too large before exporting?

Use File > Print Preview to see the exact layout including header and footer sizes. If the body area looks too small in Print Preview, the header or footer is too large.
