Fix Blank Pages in Google Docs to PDF
Extra blank pages in a PDF exported from Google Docs are always caused by something in the source document. The most common culprits are empty paragraphs, manual page breaks inserted in the wrong place, tables that push content to a new page, and section breaks with different orientations. This guide covers each cause with specific fixes.
Show hidden characters to find the cause
The first step in fixing blank pages is turning on paragraph marks. Press Ctrl+Shift+8 (Cmd+Shift+8 on Mac) in Google Docs to show all hidden characters including paragraph marks, page breaks, and section breaks. These invisible elements are almost always the cause of unexpected blank pages in the PDF.
Empty paragraphs at the end of the document
The most common source of a blank page at the end of a PDF is one or more empty paragraphs after the last line of content. Each empty paragraph occupies vertical space. If enough empty paragraphs accumulate, they push the last content to the end of a page and create an empty page after it. With paragraph marks visible, scroll to the end and delete everything after the last line of real content.
Page breaks and section breaks
A manual page break (Insert > Break > Page break) forces everything after it to a new page. If a page break was inserted at the end of a section where a new page was already starting naturally, it creates a blank page. Show hidden characters and look for dotted lines labeled 'Page break' between content sections. Delete any that are creating unwanted blank pages.
Tables and content overflow
A table that is too tall for the remaining space on a page causes the table to push to the next page. If the space before the table is less than one line but more than nothing, the result is a nearly blank page with just a small amount of space at the top. Adjust the table size or move it so it fits on the current page.
Mixed portrait and landscape pages
Documents with both portrait and landscape pages use section breaks to change orientation. If a section break for a landscape page is placed incorrectly, it can create an extra blank page between the portrait and landscape sections. Careful placement of section breaks eliminates this issue.

Why is there a blank page at the end of my PDF?
A blank last page is almost always caused by empty paragraphs after the last line of content. Turn on paragraph marks with Ctrl+Shift+8 and delete everything after the final content paragraph.
Why are there blank pages in the middle of my PDF?
A manual page break, a section break set to 'next page', or a table pushing content to the following page creates blank pages in the middle. Enable paragraph marks and look for break symbols between the pages that are blank.
Why does a specific page in my PDF appear blank even though the Doc looks fine?
Content on that page may have been set to white text on a white background, or images may have been removed without their paragraph containers being deleted. Show paragraph marks and check whether content exists on that page in the Doc.
Why does my PDF have one more page than my Google Doc?
There are hidden characters on the last line of the document that push it onto an extra page in PDF rendering. The PDF layout engine calculates page breaks differently from the editor view. Show paragraph marks and delete any extra empty lines at the end of the document.
