Fix Empty Paragraphs Causing Blank Pages in Google Docs to PDF
Empty paragraphs that cause blank pages in the PDF are in the Google Doc but invisible in normal view. They occupy vertical space that can push content off a page or create entirely blank pages. Here is how to find and remove them.
Turn on paragraph marks
Press Ctrl+Shift+8 to show paragraph marks. Every empty paragraph appears as a small backward-P symbol on its own line. Scan the document for clusters of these symbols, especially near the end of the document or between sections.
Delete empty paragraphs at the end of the document
Click at the end of the last real content in the document. Press Ctrl+Shift+End to select from that point to the end of the document. If the selection shows only paragraph marks and no real content, press Delete. This removes all trailing empty paragraphs.
Remove empty paragraphs between sections
Multiple empty paragraphs between sections can create enough vertical space to push content to the next page and create a near-blank page. Delete the extra paragraph marks, keeping at most one or two between sections if you need visual separation.
Check heading styles for extra spacing
Heading styles in Google Docs often have built-in space before and after the heading. An empty paragraph immediately before a heading doubles the spacing and can push it to the next page. Delete the empty paragraph before the heading. The heading style's built-in spacing will still provide visual separation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do empty paragraphs exist in my document?
Empty paragraphs are added when you press Enter without typing anything. They are common at the end of documents when someone pressed Enter a few extra times, and between sections where spacers were used instead of paragraph spacing settings.
How many empty paragraphs does it take to create a blank page?
It depends on the line spacing and font size. At 12pt font with 1.15 line spacing, roughly 50-60 empty paragraph marks can fill an entire page. Fewer empty paragraphs at the end of an almost-full page can push to a blank second page.
