Fix Images Moving Position in Google Docs to PDF

Images that move to a different position during PDF export are set to a floating wrap mode in Google Docs. When the text reflows during PDF layout, the image moves with it or lands in an unexpected position. Changing the image positioning settings fixes this.

Switch to In line with text positioning

Click the image that is moving. Below the image, small icons appear for positioning options. Click the leftmost icon, which represents In line with text. This anchors the image to a specific point in the text flow rather than floating it freely. In line images export to PDF at a predictable position.

Anchor floating images to a paragraph

If you need the image to float beside text, make sure it is anchored to the correct paragraph. Right-click the image, select Image options, and check which paragraph it is anchored to. If it is anchored to a paragraph that shifts position during PDF layout, the image shifts too. Anchor it to a nearby stable paragraph or switch to inline.

Use tables to control image placement

For layouts that require an image beside text, place both in a two-column table. Put the image in one cell and the text in the other. Tables export positions reliably to PDF because cell boundaries are fixed. Set the table border to transparent if you do not want a visible box.

Check for text wrapping causing repositioning

An image set to Wrap text will move whenever the surrounding text reflows during export. If the document has different line breaks in the PDF than in the editor (due to font or spacing differences), the wrapped image will end up in a different relative position. In line mode eliminates this variable entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do images jump to the top of the next page in the PDF?

A floating image near the bottom of a page may be pushed to the next page if there is not enough room on the current page. Switch to inline mode and add a manual page break before the image paragraph if you need it at the top of a page.

Is there a way to lock an image in place for PDF export?

Inline mode is the most reliable locking mechanism for PDF export. It puts the image at a fixed position in the text stream, which translates to a fixed position in the PDF.
