Fix Missing Images in Google Docs to PDF

Images that do not show up, look blurry, or move to the wrong position in a PDF exported from Google Docs are among the most common conversion complaints. Most image issues trace back to how the image was inserted, its original resolution, or its positioning setting in the document. This guide covers every image problem with specific fixes.

1

Why images go missing in PDF exports

Images in Google Docs can be inserted in two ways: directly uploaded into the document, or inserted as a link to an external URL. Directly uploaded images are embedded in the document and almost always export correctly. Linked images depend on the external URL being accessible at the time of export. If the URL is unreachable, the image does not appear in the PDF.

2

Image positioning and wrapping

Images set to 'wrap text' in Google Docs float freely on the page. During PDF export, these floating images can shift position slightly, especially if they are placed between paragraphs that reflowed during the layout calculation. Images set to 'In line with text' are anchored to a specific position in the text flow and export more predictably.

3

Resolution and quality

Google's PDF export renders images at the resolution they were inserted. It does not improve image quality beyond the source. If an image looks sharp in the Doc but blurry in the PDF, the PDF viewer may be rendering at a different zoom level. Open the PDF at 100% zoom before deciding whether the resolution is actually reduced.

4

Charts, drawings, and embedded content

Charts created in Google Sheets and embedded in a Google Doc export as static PNG images in the PDF. They will not update if the underlying data changes after export. Drawings created with Insert > Drawing export as vector graphics and should render at any size without quality loss.

5

Background images

Background images added through workarounds such as inserting an image and sending it behind text do not always export through the standard PDF API. They may appear as a blank area or be absent from the PDF. For reliable background color, use Google Docs' built-in page color option under File > Page Setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are all my images missing from the PDF?

If all images are missing, check whether you are using a browser extension or third-party tool that intercepts the export. Use the Docs to PDF extension which calls Google's own export API directly. Also verify the document does not have restricted download permissions that block image export.

Why do some images export but others do not?

Images that export are directly embedded. Images that do not export are likely linked from an external URL that is no longer accessible. Select each missing image in the Google Doc and check whether it shows a broken link indicator. Re-insert those images directly from your computer.

Why are my images blurry in the PDF?

The source image was inserted at low resolution. The PDF export does not reduce resolution, so if it looks blurry, the original file is low-res. Replace it with a higher resolution version, ideally at least 150 DPI for screen viewing and 300 DPI for print.

Why did my images move to different positions in the PDF?

Images set to wrap text mode float relative to the surrounding text. If text reflowed during PDF layout, the image moved with it or shifted relative to the new text positions. Change images to In line with text for consistent positioning.

Why are my charts not showing in the PDF?

Charts embedded from Google Sheets export as static images. If a chart is not showing, it may have been inserted as a link that requires authentication to access. Open the chart in the Doc, click it, and check the option to unlink or update it before exporting.
