Fix Charts Not Rendering in Google Docs to PDF

Charts embedded from Google Sheets that do not render in a PDF export are either out of sync with the source data, inserted as a broken link, or affected by a Google API limitation during export. Here is how to fix each case.

Update the chart before exporting

Click on the chart in the Google Doc. If a small notification appears saying the chart is out of date, click Update. This re-renders the chart from the current Google Sheets data and refreshes the embedded image in the document. Then re-run the PDF export.

Unlink the chart to embed it as a static image

Click the chart in the Google Doc, then click the three-dot menu that appears in the upper right corner of the chart. Select Unlink. This converts the chart from a linked reference to a static embedded image. It will no longer update automatically, but it will always export correctly to PDF without depending on the Sheets connection.

Re-insert the chart if it is missing

If the chart area is blank in the PDF, try deleting the chart from the Google Doc entirely and re-inserting it. Go to Insert > Chart > From Sheets, select the correct spreadsheet and chart, and insert it again. Then unlink it if you want guaranteed export reliability.

Copy the chart as an image

In Google Sheets, click the chart, then use the three-dot menu and select Download > PNG image. Then in Google Docs, delete the linked chart and insert the PNG using Insert > Image > Upload from computer. A static image always exports without any link dependency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my chart show in the Doc but not in the PDF?

The chart is a linked object that requires the Sheets API to render. During PDF export the API call may fail. Unlink the chart to embed it as a static image and it will always export.

Will my chart update in the PDF if the spreadsheet data changes?

No. PDF is a static format. You need to update the chart in the Google Doc and re-export the PDF whenever the data changes.
