Rename a Google Doc Before Saving as PDF
Renaming before export is the simplest way to control the PDF file name. Change the document title in Drive to the exact name you want the PDF to have, then run the export.
Renaming in Drive
Renaming before export in Drive is done by right-clicking the document and choosing Rename. Type the new name and press Enter. The title updates in Drive. Now when you run the export, the PDF will have the new name.
Renaming inside the document
You can also click the document title at the top of the Google Docs editor to rename it. Changes to the title sync immediately to Drive. The new name is used by the next export.
Naming conventions for clean file systems
Adopt a consistent naming format before exporting to keep downloaded PDFs organized. A format like ClientName-DocumentType-YYYY-MM makes files easy to sort and search on your computer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does renaming a Google Doc affect any shared links to it?
No. Drive links are based on the file ID, not the file name. Renaming the document does not break any existing share links.
