Fix Bold Text Not Rendering in Google Docs to PDF

Bold text that does not appear bold in a PDF exported from Google Docs is caused by the font not having an embeddable bold variant. Here is how to identify the problem font and fix it.

Check whether the font has a Bold variant

Go to fonts.google.com and search for the font used in your document. On the font page, look at the available styles. If Bold (700) is not listed, the font has no bold variant. Any text with Bold applied will either use a synthesized bold (which may not embed) or revert to regular weight in the PDF.

Switch to a font with Bold variant

Replace the font with one that has a Bold variant in Google Fonts. Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, Raleway, Montserrat, and Nunito all have Bold (700) variants. Select the affected text, change the font, and re-export.

Apply the bold variant directly

Instead of applying Bold through the B button, choose the bold variant from the font name. In the Google Docs font selector, type the font name followed by Bold, for example 'Roboto Bold'. This selects the bold weight directly as its own font, which embeds more reliably than the styled version.

Test with a manual export

Use File > Download > PDF Document in Google Docs to test whether bold renders correctly with the built-in export tool. If bold works there, the issue is specific to the extension. If bold also fails with File > Download, the problem is in the font itself and needs to be fixed in the document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does bold text look correct in the Google Doc but not in the PDF?

Google Docs renders bold using the browser's font engine, which can synthesize bold by thickening strokes. PDF embedding requires an actual bold font file. If the font has no bold variant file, the PDF cannot reproduce the bold appearance.
