Fix Custom Font Not Embedded in Google Docs to PDF
A custom font that is not embedded in the PDF exported from Google Docs is being substituted because Google's export server does not have access to the font file. Here is why this happens and what your options are.
Why custom fonts cannot embed
Google Docs PDF export happens on Google's servers. The export server can only use fonts from the Google Fonts library. If you loaded a custom font into your browser using a local font tool or a Chrome extension, the editor displays it using your local font file, but when Google's server generates the PDF, it cannot access your local fonts and must substitute.
Option 1: Find a Google Fonts alternative
Browse fonts.google.com and search for fonts that match the appearance of your custom font. Many commercial fonts have free alternatives in Google Fonts. Roboto closely resembles Helvetica. Merriweather is similar to Georgia. Once you find a substitute, apply it throughout the document using Ctrl+A and the font selector.
Option 2: Export to Word and convert
Export the Google Doc to .docx format using File > Download > Microsoft Word. Open the .docx in Microsoft Word with the custom font installed on your computer. Export from Word to PDF. Word uses your local fonts and embeds them in the PDF. This is a workaround for situations where the exact font is non-negotiable.
Option 3: Add the font in a PDF editor
Export the Google Doc to PDF using a safe substitute font. Then open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Pro and use the Edit PDF tool to change the font of specific text elements to the custom font. Acrobat uses your locally installed fonts for this operation and can embed them in the saved PDF.

Can I upload a custom font to Google Fonts for my documents?
