Fix Column Widths Changing in Google Docs to PDF
Table column widths that change in a PDF from Google Docs are usually caused by cells with content that is wider than the column setting, or by the table being wider than the page. Here is how to lock column widths for consistent export.
Set exact column widths in Table properties
Right-click the table and go to Table properties. Under Column, set a fixed width for each column in inches or centimeters. Entering a specific value prevents the PDF engine from auto-resizing columns based on content. Verify that the sum of all column widths plus cell padding does not exceed the page width.
Prevent text from expanding columns
A long word or URL in a cell that is wider than the column can force the column to expand. Break long URLs onto multiple lines using a line break (Shift+Enter) or shorten the displayed text with a hyperlink. Long strings without spaces in table cells are a common cause of column expansion.
Check page width calculation
Go to File > Page Setup and note the page width and margin values. Subtract the left and right margins from the page width to get the printable width. If your table's total column widths exceed this value, the table overflows and columns resize to compensate. Reduce column widths to fit within the printable area.
Disable auto-resize on the table
In Table properties, look for an option to disable automatic column resizing or to use a fixed table layout. Setting specific column widths is the most reliable way to ensure they do not change during PDF export.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do column widths look correct in the Doc but change in the PDF?
The column widths may be set as proportional widths rather than fixed values. Proportional widths are calculated based on the available space, which can differ between the editor and the PDF engine. Set absolute width values in Table properties.
