Fix Table Overflowing Page in Google Docs to PDF
A table that overflows past the right or bottom edge of the page in a PDF from Google Docs is wider or taller than the printable area allows. Here is how to resize the table to fit within the page.
Calculate the maximum table width
Go to File > Page Setup and note the page width and the left and right margins. Subtract both margins from the page width. For a standard US Letter page (8.5 inches) with 1-inch margins on each side, the printable width is 6.5 inches. Your table's total column widths must not exceed this number.
Resize columns to fit
Right-click the table and go to Table properties. Reduce each column width so the total fits within the printable width. Distribute the available width proportionally based on the importance of each column's content. Narrower columns with short labels, wider columns with longer content.
Switch to landscape orientation for wide tables
If the table content cannot be narrowed without losing readability, change the page orientation to landscape for the section containing the table. Go to File > Page Setup, set Orientation to Landscape, and apply it to the section with the table. The printable width increases from 6.5 inches to approximately 9 inches on a US Letter page.
Reduce font size inside the table
Reducing the font size of text inside table cells allows content to fit in narrower columns. Select all cells, choose a slightly smaller font size (10pt or 9pt instead of 12pt), and check whether the columns can be narrowed while still being readable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the table look fine in the Google Doc but overflow in the PDF?
The Google Doc editor window is flexible and scales to fit the table. The PDF enforces the exact page width. A table that appears to fit in the editor may actually be wider than the page margins allow. Use File > Print Preview to see the true page layout.
