Convert Drive Files to PDF Without Opening Them
Converting without opening is one of the main time advantages of the Docs to PDF extension. You select files in the Drive file list and run the extension. The files do not open in editor tabs and you do not navigate to any menu inside the files.
The difference from manual export
The manual method requires opening each file, clicking File > Download > PDF, and waiting. For twenty files that is twenty sequences of steps. The extension works from the Drive file list. Select twenty files, click the icon once, and all twenty convert without opening any of them.
What the extension reads from Drive
The extension reads the file ID and MIME type of each selected item from the Drive interface. It does not need the file to be open in the editor to get this information. The file ID is enough for Google's export API to locate and render the document.
Use cases for unopened batch conversion
Archiving a completed project folder, converting weekly reports from a recurring template, or exporting class materials before a semester starts. In all of these, you know which files you want and do not need to review each one before converting.
Frequently Asked Questions
