Convert Google Drive Files to PDF

Google Drive holds most of your important documents, but sharing a Drive link means the recipient needs a Google account and sees a live, editable file. A PDF solves both problems. The Docs to PDF Chrome extension adds a convert button directly to Google Drive so you can export any file to PDF without leaving your browser, without uploading anything, and without losing the formatting you built.

1

Which Drive file types you can convert

The extension converts Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides to PDF. All three use Google's native export engine, the same one that runs when you go to File > Download > PDF inside each editor. Uploaded Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files that have been converted to Google format are also supported. Files stored in Drive but not converted to Google format, such as raw .docx or .xlsx uploads, require opening in the Google editor first.

2

How conversion works from Google Drive

Install the Docs to PDF extension from the Chrome Web Store. Open Google Drive in your browser. Select one or more files using the checkboxes in list view, or open a single file. Click the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar. The extension calls Google's own export API using your existing Drive credentials. Google generates the PDF on its servers and delivers it directly to your downloads folder. Your documents never pass through a third-party service.

3

Converting files in shared drives

Shared drives in Google Workspace give teams a shared space for documents. The extension works in shared drives just like it works in personal Drive. Navigate to the shared drive, select the files you need, and run the extension. You need at least Viewer access to export a file. If the file owner has disabled downloads for viewers, the export will fail and the extension will report that file as an error.

4

Converting an entire folder to PDF

To convert all files in a folder, open the folder in Google Drive, switch to list view, and press Ctrl+A or Cmd+A to select everything. Click the extension icon. The extension filters for convertible file types and exports each one as a separate PDF. Non-Google files are skipped. If the folder contains subfolders, the extension does not recurse automatically. Open each subfolder and repeat the process to convert its contents.

5

File naming in converted PDFs

Each PDF takes the exact name of the source file in Google Drive. A document called 'Project Proposal - Client A' becomes 'Project Proposal - Client A.pdf' in your downloads folder. If you are converting a large batch, sort or rename files in Drive before running the extension to get the output naming you want. Chrome saves files to your default downloads folder unless you have configured it to ask each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a Google Drive file to PDF?

Install the Docs to PDF Chrome extension. Open Google Drive and select the file or files you want. Click the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar. The PDF downloads immediately to your computer.

Can I convert files from a shared Google Drive to PDF?

Yes. The extension works on any file you have at least Viewer access to, including files in shared drives and files shared with you by colleagues. Files with download restrictions set by the owner will not export.

Does converting a file remove it from Google Drive?

No. The conversion creates a new PDF file on your computer. The original file stays in Google Drive exactly as it was. You can convert the same file as many times as you need.

Can I convert an entire Google Drive folder to PDF?

Yes. Open the folder, select all files with Ctrl+A or Cmd+A, and click the extension icon. The extension converts every Google Doc, Sheet, and Slide in the folder. Non-Google files are skipped.

Does the extension preserve formatting when converting Drive files?

Yes. The extension uses Google's own export API, so the rendering is identical to File > Download > PDF. Fonts, tables, images, headers, footers, and page layout all come through correctly.

Is there a free way to convert Google Drive files to PDF?

Yes. The extension is free to install and the free plan includes a monthly conversion allowance. There are no watermarks on any plan. The Pro plan removes the monthly limit for high-volume users.
