Convert Google Docs to PDF from Google Drive

The Docs to PDF Chrome extension adds a convert button to Google Drive so you can export any Google Doc to PDF without opening it, without navigating to File > Download, and without uploading anything to a third-party service. Select one file or fifty, and the PDFs appear in your downloads folder.

1

How to convert a Google Doc from Drive

Install the Docs to PDF extension from the Chrome Web Store. Open Google Drive in your browser. Click the checkbox next to the document you want to convert, or select multiple documents. Click the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar. The extension calls Google's export API and the PDF downloads immediately.

2

Converting shared documents

The extension works on any Google Doc you have at least Viewer access to. This includes documents shared with you by colleagues, documents in shared drives, and documents in folders others have shared. If a document has download restrictions set by the owner, the export will fail. Most standard sharing permissions allow PDF export.

3

Formatting accuracy

Every conversion goes through Google's own export engine, the same system that runs File > Download > PDF inside the editor. Tables, inline images, custom fonts, headers and footers, page margins, numbered lists, and hyperlinks all come through correctly. There is no intermediate re-rendering by a third-party tool.

4

Converting multiple Google Docs at once

Select multiple documents in Drive using Ctrl+click on Windows or Cmd+click on Mac. For all documents in a folder, use Ctrl+A or Cmd+A. Then click the extension icon. The extension processes each document in sequence and downloads a separate PDF for each one. Large batches run in the background while you continue working.

5

One-click conversion from the editor

You do not have to be in Drive to convert. If you have a Google Doc open in the editor, the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar works the same way. Click it once and the current document exports to PDF. This is faster than File > Download > PDF because it is one click instead of three.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I convert a Google Doc to PDF without opening it?

Yes. Select the file in Google Drive and click the extension icon. The document exports without you needing to open it in the editor.

What happens to the original Google Doc when I convert it?

Nothing. The original stays in Drive unchanged. The conversion creates a new PDF file in your downloads folder.

Can I convert Google Docs shared with me to PDF?

Yes, as long as the sharing settings allow downloads. Most shared documents allow PDF export. Documents with explicit download restrictions will not export.

Does converting preserve links and table of contents?

Hyperlinks are preserved in the exported PDF. A table of contents created with heading styles will appear in the PDF, though PDF navigation behavior depends on the reader application.

Is there a free way to convert Google Docs to PDF from Drive?

Yes. The extension is free and the free plan includes a monthly conversion limit with no watermarks. The Pro plan is available for unlimited conversions.
