Save Google Docs as PDF
The manual way to save a Google Doc as PDF is File > Download > PDF Document, which works fine for one document. When you need to do it repeatedly, or when you want to save directly to Drive rather than your downloads folder, the Docs to PDF extension is faster. This covers every way to save Google Docs as PDF, from a single doc to batches of documents, with formatting intact.
The built-in method: File > Download
Inside any open Google Doc, go to File > Download > PDF Document. Google generates the PDF using its own rendering engine and your browser downloads it to your default downloads folder. This is the simplest approach for a single document. The file is named after the document title automatically.
The extension method: one click from Drive
The Docs to PDF Chrome extension lets you save a Google Doc as PDF without opening it. In Google Drive, click the document to select it, then click the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar. The PDF downloads immediately. For multiple documents, hold Ctrl or Cmd to select several files and click the extension once. All of them export in sequence.
Formatting is preserved because Google does the rendering
Both the built-in method and the extension use Google's export API. This means the PDF is generated by Google's own servers using the same engine that powers the Docs editor. Custom fonts, tables, inline images, headers, footers, page margins, and hyperlinks all render correctly. There is no re-parsing or third-party conversion happening.
Where the PDF goes
The extension downloads the PDF to your browser's default downloads folder. The file name matches the Google Doc title. If you want the PDF saved to a specific location on your computer, configure Chrome to ask where to save each file before running the export. For saving the PDF back to Google Drive instead, use the Drive save option in the extension settings.
Saving from Google Drive vs. from inside the document
Saving from inside the document requires the document to be open in a tab. Saving from Drive works without opening the document at all. For a single document, both approaches take similar effort. For multiple documents, the Drive approach is much faster because you never need to open any of them individually.

How do I save a Google Doc as PDF?
Open the document, go to File > Download > PDF Document, and the browser downloads the PDF. Alternatively, install the Docs to PDF extension, select the document in Google Drive without opening it, and click the extension icon.
Can I save a Google Doc as PDF for free?
Yes. The built-in download method is free. The Docs to PDF extension has a free plan that includes a monthly conversion allowance.
Does saving as PDF change the original document?
No. The export creates a new PDF file. The original Google Doc stays in Drive exactly as it was.
Can I save a Google Doc as PDF without a Google account?
If someone shares a Google Doc with you via a public link, you can open it and download it as PDF without signing in. Go to File > Download > PDF Document while viewing the shared document.
Why does my saved PDF look different from the Google Doc?
The most common cause is a font that is not embedded in the PDF. If you used a non-Google font, it may substitute in the export. Switching to a standard Google Font in the document resolves this.
Can I save multiple Google Docs as PDF at once?
Yes, with the Docs to PDF extension. Select multiple documents in Google Drive and click the extension icon once. Each document is saved as a separate PDF.
