Save Google Docs as PDF

Inside any open Google Doc, go to File > Download > PDF Document. Google generates the PDF using its own rendering engine and your browser downloads it to your default downloads folder. This is the simplest approach for a single document. The file is named after the document title automatically.

The Docs to PDF Chrome extension lets you save a Google Doc as PDF without opening it. In Google Drive, click the document to select it, then click the extension icon in your Chrome toolbar. The PDF downloads immediately. For multiple documents, hold Ctrl or Cmd to select several files and click the extension once. All of them export in sequence.

Both the built-in method and the extension use Google's export API. This means the PDF is generated by Google's own servers using the same engine that powers the Docs editor. Custom fonts, tables, inline images, headers, footers, page margins, and hyperlinks all render correctly. There is no re-parsing or third-party conversion happening.

The extension downloads the PDF to your browser's default downloads folder. The file name matches the Google Doc title. If you want the PDF saved to a specific location on your computer, configure Chrome to ask where to save each file before running the export. For saving the PDF back to Google Drive instead, use the Drive save option in the extension settings.

Saving from inside the document requires the document to be open in a tab. Saving from Drive works without opening the document at all. For a single document, both approaches take similar effort. For multiple documents, the Drive approach is much faster because you never need to open any of them individually.
