Merge Docs into PDF with Custom Bookmark Names

The quality of a bookmarked merged PDF depends on the quality of the bookmark names. Custom names that describe the content clearly make navigation fast. Generic names make it confusing.

Where bookmark names come from

Document-level bookmarks use the filename of each source document. Section-level bookmarks use the heading text. To customize document-level bookmarks, rename your source Docs in Drive before merging. To customize section bookmarks, edit the heading text in each document.

Editing names after merging

In Adobe Acrobat, you can double-click any bookmark to rename it. This is useful for making small adjustments after the merge without re-running the entire operation. For large changes, editing the source documents and re-merging produces cleaner results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set bookmark names in the extension before merging?

The extension uses the document filename and heading text as bookmark names. Direct custom naming in the merge panel is not currently supported. Rename source documents in Drive to control document-level bookmark names.
