Export Google Docs as PDF
Exporting a Google Doc as a PDF takes five clicks through the native menu. The Docs to PDF extension cuts that to one. Open your document or select files in Drive, click the extension icon, and the PDF is in your downloads folder. No uploads to outside servers, no formatting surprises.

Explore →Export vs download: what is the difference?
In Google's own menus, the option is called 'Download as PDF'. Export and download mean the same thing here: Google generates a PDF version of your document and sends it to your browser. The Docs to PDF extension uses the same export API that powers the native menu. The difference is that the extension can trigger that export for multiple files at once, from Drive or from inside an open document, without navigating through menus.
How the extension works
Install the Docs to PDF Chrome extension from the Web Store. When you are inside a Google Doc, the extension icon in your toolbar triggers a direct export to PDF. When you are in Google Drive, select one or more files first and then click the icon. The extension calls Google's export API using your existing login, so no re-authentication is needed. The PDF is generated on Google's servers and downloaded directly to your computer.
Export quality and formatting
Because the extension uses Google's own export pipeline, the output quality is identical to what you get from File > Download > PDF. Fonts, tables, page margins, headers, footers, inline images, and hyperlinks all render exactly as they appear in the editor. If something looks wrong in the exported PDF, the same issue will appear in a manual export. Fix it in the document, then re-export.
Batch export for multiple files
The main advantage of the extension over the native menu is batch export. You can select 10, 50, or 100 files in Google Drive and export all of them as PDFs in one operation. The extension processes each file sequentially, downloads the PDF, and moves to the next. The browser needs to stay open while the batch runs, but no manual steps are required between files.
File naming in exports
Each exported PDF is named after the original Google document. A file called 'Project Brief Q2 2026' exports as 'Project Brief Q2 2026.pdf'. If you need a different naming convention, rename the Google Docs before exporting. The extension does not offer a built-in rename step, but the names from Drive carry through exactly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export a Google Doc as a PDF?
Install the Docs to PDF Chrome extension. Open the Google Doc and click the extension icon in your toolbar. The PDF is downloaded to your browser's downloads folder immediately.
Is exporting Google Docs as PDF free?
Yes. The Docs to PDF extension is free to install. The free plan includes a monthly conversion allowance. For high-volume users, the Pro plan removes that limit.
Does exporting a Google Doc as PDF affect the original file?
No. The export creates a new PDF file. The original Google Doc in your Drive is not changed, moved, or deleted.
Can I export Google Sheets and Slides as PDF too?
Yes. The extension works with Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. The export process is the same for all three file types.
Why does my exported PDF look different from the Google Doc?
The most common cause is a font that is not embedded in the PDF. Open the PDF's properties in Adobe Acrobat and check which fonts were substituted. Switch to a standard Google Font in the document to fix the issue.
Can I export Google Docs to PDF without opening each file?
Yes. In Google Drive, select the files you want using checkboxes, then click the extension icon. The extension exports all selected files without you having to open each one.
