Export Google Docs as PDF

In Google's own menus, the option is called 'Download as PDF'. Export and download mean the same thing here: Google generates a PDF version of your document and sends it to your browser. The Docs to PDF extension uses the same export API that powers the native menu. The difference is that the extension can trigger that export for multiple files at once, from Drive or from inside an open document, without navigating through menus.

Install the Docs to PDF Chrome extension from the Web Store. When you are inside a Google Doc, the extension icon in your toolbar triggers a direct export to PDF. When you are in Google Drive, select one or more files first and then click the icon. The extension calls Google's export API using your existing login, so no re-authentication is needed. The PDF is generated on Google's servers and downloaded directly to your computer.

Because the extension uses Google's own export pipeline, the output quality is identical to what you get from File > Download > PDF. Fonts, tables, page margins, headers, footers, inline images, and hyperlinks all render exactly as they appear in the editor. If something looks wrong in the exported PDF, the same issue will appear in a manual export. Fix it in the document, then re-export.

The main advantage of the extension over the native menu is batch export. You can select 10, 50, or 100 files in Google Drive and export all of them as PDFs in one operation. The extension processes each file sequentially, downloads the PDF, and moves to the next. The browser needs to stay open while the batch runs, but no manual steps are required between files.

Each exported PDF is named after the original Google document. A file called 'Project Brief Q2 2026' exports as 'Project Brief Q2 2026.pdf'. If you need a different naming convention, rename the Google Docs before exporting. The extension does not offer a built-in rename step, but the names from Drive carry through exactly.
